Due to the growing number of applications that use spring loaded battery contacts, complete connector solutions based on this technology became neccessary. The modern manufacturing processes of the SMD-technology, that requires an accurate and easy mounting, was the main reason to develop standard frames to design customized connectors. Spring loaded battery probes are designed for load current and signal transfer. All contacts in the described systems are spring loaded contacts which provide very good resistance to vibration and shock, and moreover they are a long-lasting interface (up to 1.000.000 cycles). Also for RF-signals the contacts are very good due to their short signal path length. Depending on the requirments on the interface, a mix between different contacts in one connector can be reasonable. For high current transmission (up to 10A) so called “Power”-contacts and for signals (less than 0.5A current) the “signal” contacts are used. Additional there are designated “ground” pins available for the population, to enable an electrostatic discharge before the mating of signal and power contacts. The premating of the ground pin to the opposite part of the interface, can enable a hotswap of the connecting parts. Ground pins can also carry up to 10A. Usually interfaces require the mounted contacts in a housing (available from 1-way to 6-way) which are independent from pattern of installation (parallel / in series) and keep the standard pitch between contacts that is usually 2.54mm (100mil). Especially for the SMD mounting the housing is very interesting for the fast placing of the connector unit and after mounting the connector the housing stabilizes the contact on the surface. To meet the very different requirements of making connection to the connectors, uwe electronic customers can choose between different options. The round post connection is apt for THT mounting of the contacts. A solder cup connection can be used to attached wires individually to the probes. The SMD termination is usually used in pick/place manufacturing in combination with SMD soldering. As a “non spring loaded” opposite to the spring loaded connectors, similar systems are available with solid pins. Also for these products SMD, solder cups and round posts are available.
